Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN)
NCHICA NwHIN Gateway Project
This project is being funded through NCHICA's contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
After a rigorous procurement process, NCHICA selected Mirth Corporation’s Mirth Meaningful Use Exchange to achieve NwHIN gateway connectivity. Mirth is a leader in commercial open source products and services powering healthcare interoperability.
The Western North Carolina’s Health Network (WNCHN) is a mature health information exchange organization (HIO) that links 16 hospitals in the region. The purpose of this gateway project is to demonstrate how an HIO can use the NwHIN to connect to federal partners. In this case, that federal partner is the VA Hospital in Asheville. In a 12-month period, there were 1,913 veteran visits to a WNCHN hospital. This initiative will enable electronic data sharing between the VA and any of the 16 WNCHN hospitals.
